Die Landschaftskunst von Ralf Witthaus

In 1100 Metern Höhe auf dem Monte Bregagno in Italien, oberhalb des Comer Sees realisierte Ralf Witthaus mit seinem Team ein temporäres Kunstprojekt: IL TESORO SMARRITO – eine 650 Meter lange Halskette, die sich als Zeichnung im Gras am Grat des Berges emporschmiegt.

Zum Fusse des Berges liegt Musso, sowie eine Handvoll weiterer Gemeinden, denen eine besondere Tradition eigen ist. In den Schmuckschatullen der Familien finden sich hier sehr alte rote Korallenketten mit silbernen Perlen, weitergegeben von Muttern zu Töchtern über viele Generationen, wertvoll und unverkäuflich. Diese Ketten sind deshalb so identitätsstiftend, weil ihnen ein Versprechen anhaftet, wenn auch die Namen und die Umstände der Familienmitglieder – der Beschenkten und der Schenker – längst dem Vergessen anheim gefallen sind.

Vor etwa 150 bis 300 Jahren war es wirtschaftlich kaum möglich für einen normalen jungen Mann am Comer See eine Familie zu gründen. Deshalb zogen viele nach Palermo um ihr Glück zu machen. Und vielen gelang es, und sie kehrten nach wenigen Jahren mit Vermögen zurück und heirateten die Frauen, denen sie ihr Herz versprochen hatten. Damit eine junge Frau auch wirklich auf den Versprochenen wartete, sendete der junge Mann ihr zum Ausdruck seines Versprechens aus Palermo eben je Korallenkette oder auch einen speziellen Ohrschmuck, der ebenfalls bis heute getragen wird.

Die Kuratorin Chiara Donisi des Vereins OverLAPS lud den Künstler Ralf Witthaus zu dem Kunstprojekt ein: „Die Region oberhalb des Comer Sees ist heute so gut wie verlassen, vor 50 Jahren war das noch ganz anders, die Menschen hier lebten von Land- und Viehwirtschaft. Das war nur möglich, wenn man die Möglichkeiten in den Alpen komplett ausnutzte, den Rhythmus der Jahreszeiten folgte und sich mit den Tieren im Gebirge auf- und abbewegte. Das Kunstprojekt ist interessant für uns, denn wenn Leute wieder kommen, um sich diese Landschaft anzusehen, werden sich auch Menschen finden, die sich darum kümmern wollen. Das Potential des schönen Ortes ist immens. Wir bieten eine Plattform an für Imagination – ausgehend von der Tradition – hinführend zu der Diskussion für eine angemessene und nachhaltige Entwicklung.“

Ralf Witthaus und sein Team zeichnete 10 Tage lang mit Akku- und Motorsensen auf den Hängen des Monte Bregagno – der Kontrast der Zeichnung ist braun zu grün – und das rasche Zuwachsen der riesigen Zeichnung gehört für ihn dazu. Für ihn ist die fertige Zeichnung nur ein Teil des Projektes, genauso wichtig ist ihm der performative Entstehungsprozess – sein Team arbeitet in schwarzer Anzughose und weißem Hemd. Ralf Witthaus sagt dazu: „Rasenmähen – also in dieser Form zu Zeichnen – ist natürlich weniger Veränderung sondern mehr eine künstlerische Geste – die Natur wird das Kunstwerk in wenigen Wochen wieder zuwachsen lassen. Das gehört für mich dazu. Was mich hier interessiert ist, dass diese besondere Agrarlandschaft revitalisiert werden kann. Dies ist eines der schönsten Plätze der Welt. Die Kette nimmt Bezug auf das Versprechen der jungen Männer einst: Ja, hier gibt es etwas, das wert ist, zurück zu kommen.“

Das Projekt wurde ermöglicht durch die Förderung der Comune Musso, Fondazione Cariplo und STIHL. Das Kunstwerk ist ganztägig und kostenfrei zu besichtigen und noch etwa 2 Wochen sichtbar.

At 1100 meters above sea level on the Monte Bregagno in Italy, above the Lake Como, Ralf Witthaus and his team realized a temporary art project: IL TESORO SMARRITO, a 650-meter long necklace that rises as a drawing in the grass at the ridge of the mountain.

At the foot of the mountain lies Musso, as well as a handful of other villages nearby, which have a special tradition. In the jewelery boxes of the families are found here ancient red coral necklaces with silver beads, passed by mothers to daughters for many generations, valuable and unsaleable. These necklaces are so important, because they are given with a special promise, even though the names and circumstances of the family members – the recipient and the donor – have long since fallen into oblivion.

About 150 to 300 years ago it was hardly possible to make a living for a family for a normal young man on Lake Como. That is why many moved to Palermo to make their fortune. And many succeeded, and after a few years they returned with a patrimony, and married the women to whom they had promised their heart before. The curator, Chiara Donisi of the cultural association OverLAPS invited the artist Ralf Witthaus to the art project: „The region above Lake Como is almost deserted, 50 years ago, it was quite different. The art project is interesting for us, because when people come back to look at this landscape, people hopefully will again take care of it. The potential of the beautiful place is immense. We want to offer a platform for imagination – starting from the tradition – leading to a discussion for an adequate and sustainable development.“

Ralf Witthaus and his team drew for 10 days on the slopes of Mount Bregagno with brushcutters – the contrast of the drawing is brown to green – and the rapid grow over of the huge drawing belongs to it. For him, the finished drawing is only a part of the project, just as important is the performative artistic process – his team works in a black suit and a white shirt. Ralf Witthaus says: „Lawn mowing – in this form of drawing – of course, it is less a change but more an artistic gesture – the nature will over grow the artwork in a few weeks. It is part of it. What interests me here is that this particular agricultural landscape can be revitalized. This is one of the most beautiful places in the world. The necklace refers to the promise of the young men once: Yes, there is something worth to come back. “

The project was made possible by the promotion of Comune Musso, Fondazione Cariplo and STIHL. The work of art can be viewed all day and free of charge and still visible for about two weeks.

A 1100 metri di quota sul monte Bregagno in Italia, sul lago di Como, Ralf Witthaus e il suo team hanno realizzato un progetto temporaneo d’arte contemporanea: IL TESORO SMARRITO, una collana disegnata sull’erba lunga 650 metri che risale la dorsale del monte.

Ai piedi della montagna si trova Musso, un centro che condivide con una manciata d’altri paesi limitrofi una speciale tradizione. Negli scrigni delle famiglie si trovano delle antiche collane di corallo rosso con spartitori in argento, che passano di madre in figlia da molte generazioni, preziose e non cedibili. Queste collane sono così importanti perché erano segno di una promessa speciale, anche se i nomi e le vicende degli avi – chi le ha ricevute e chi le ha donate – sono caduti nell’oblio da ormai molto tempo.

Tra i 300 e i 150 anni fa era molto difficile per i giovani uomini dell’alto lago di Como avere un reddito con cui fare famiglia. Per questo motivo molti di loro si trasferirono a Palermo per cercare fortuna. E molti ci riuscirono, e dopo pochi anni tornarono con un piccolo patrimonio, e sposarono la donna a cui avevano promesso il loro cuore al momento della partenza. Per essere sicuri che le loro donne li aspettassero e per confermare la loro promessa questi giovani uomini erano soliti inviare da Palermo una collana di corallo, o degli orecchini, anch’essi indossati fino ai giorni nostri.

La curatrice, Chiara Donisi dell’associazione OverLAPS, cha invitato l’artista Ralf Witthaus a realizzare il progetto artistico, racconta: “La regione dei monti dell’Alto Lario, oggi praticamente abbandonata, fino a cinquant’anni fa era molto diversa. Le persone vivevano di agricoltura e allevamento, e per riuscirci l’unico modo era di sfruttare appieno quello che il territorio offriva – muovendosi secondo il ritmo delle stagioni lungo le pendici delle montagne. Il progetto artistico è stato per noi importante, perché facendo ritornare le persone a visitare questo paesaggio, le si invita a ricominciare a prendersi cura di esso. Il potenziale di questo luogo meraviglioso è immenso. Noi vogliamo offrire una piattaforma per immaginare – a partire dalla tradizione – uno sviluppo possibile e sostenibile”.

Ralf Witthaus e il suo team hanno disegnato per 10 giorni sulle pendici del monte Bregagno con il tosaerba – il contrasto del disegno è marrone e verde – e la rapida ricrescita sopra il grande disegno fa parte di esso. Per l’artista, il disegno finito è solo una parte del progetto, altrettanto importante del processo artistico performativo – il suo team lavora in abito nero e camicia bianca. Ralf Witthaus afferma: “Tagliare l’erba – nelle forme del disegno – ovviamente, non è tanto un cambiamento quanto piuttosto un gesto artistico – la natura cancellerà l’opera in poche settimane. È parte dell’opera. Ciò che mi interessa in questo luogo è che questo particolare paesaggio agricolo può essere rivitalizzato. Questo è uno dei posti più belli del mondo. La collana si riferisce alla promessa fatta da un giovane uomo un tempo: sì, c’è qualcosa per cui vale la pena tornare”.

Il progetto è stato possibile grazie al contributo di Comune di Musso, Fondazione Cariplo e STIHL. Si può visitare l’opera quotidianamente e gratuitamente per circa due settimane.
